In addition to stocking 200 hair care, skin care, cosmetics, grooming and body care brands (including Native, Beauty Beez's own line of hair extensions), the space now features a bar full-service braiding as well as facials and waxing. While noticing the lack of options for women of color and the negative customer service experience in hair and beauty, Brittney Ogike, sports and business executive and self-proclaimed lifestyle mom, founded Beauty Beez for setting the standard for how women shop for their hair care needs. The beauty supply stores that carry our beauty essentials don't have the customer service we get from prestige beauty retailers; however, [these companies] don't have inclusive product offerings,” Ogike told UncoverLA. Photo: Courtesy of Beauty Beez“On average, black women can visit up to three different stores in one trip to get everything we need in makeup, skincare, and haircare,” she says. Launched as an online store in July 2019, Beauty Beez's physical storefront opened a month later. But, despite a year with both political and racial challenges, Ogike prevailed as many black women sought ways to maintain their hair, take care of themselves and support so many businesses owned by black people as possible. So to see a black girl like me on TV with braids - [Brandy] became a fine example of "Oh wait a minute, the braids are flying.
How did you start as a hairdresser? It was actually in college - because now I'm in this very academic and competitive environment - that I started asking myself these questions, like, "What do I want to do for the rest of my life?" In fact, people were just saying, "There's no way an all-natural hair salon will survive in L.A., the land of weaves."
