Braid (Hairstyle)
History and uses[edit]Tewodros II (c. 1818 - 1868 CE), Emperor of Ethiopia, depicted in History of Ethiopia from Aksum to Revolution (1998), wearing braided locks. The earliest known reproduction of hair braiding dates back approximately 30,000 years: The Venus of Willendorf, now known in academia as the Woman of Willendorf, is a female figurine believed to have been made between 28 000 and 25,000 BCE. During the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, many peoples of the Near East, Asia Minor, the Caucasus, the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa, such as the Sumerians, the Elamites and ancient Egyptians, were depicted in art with braided or slicked back hair and beards. Braid patterns or hairstyles can be an indication of a person's community, age, marital status, wealth, power, social position, and religion. [8]

On July 3, 2019, California became the first US state to ban natural hair discrimination. Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law the CROWN Act, prohibiting employers and schools from discriminating against hairstyles such as dreadlocks, braids, afros and twists. [9] Later in 2019, Assembly Bill 07797 became law in New York State; it "prohibits racial discrimination based on natural hair or hairstyles. There are a number of different types of braided hairstyles including, generally, French braids, cornrows, and box braiding.[11] Braided hairstyles can also be used in combination with or as an alternative to simpler attachments, such as ponytails or braids.[12]

Braids are normally made tighter in black culture than in others, such as in cornrows or box braids. [14] Alternative braiding techniques like knotless braids, which incorporate more of a person's natural hair and place less tension on the scalp, may cause less discomfort. [15]
Braids are generally not worn year-round in black culture; instead they are alternated with other popular hairstyles such as hair twists, protective hairstyles and more. [16] As long as the braids are made with a person's own hair, it can be considered part of natural hair movement.
